NME Masthead

NME is a magazine that is aimed at males ranging from the age of 20-35. this is the masthead that is almost always used on its magazine front cover. This is there title that is used the most, but in some cases they change the title colour to fit in with all the rest of the overall colour scheme.

NME has used red for the masthead main colour. Red is a very gender neutral colour, so it doesn't really show that the magazine is for a particular gender. Where as colours like pink and blue gives of a better indication of the reader that the magazine is intended for. The red shows that maybe a woman could enjoy the magazine if she wanted to read it even though the typical reader is a male. The type face is more of a masculine type face, which is the way that the magazine shows it is focusing on more a male readership.

This masthead has helped me in deciding the kind if masthead I want. My masthead is going to be a 3 or 4 letter word much like NME, and have a longer caption under the masthead that will show what the letters stand for. But the type face used isn't the type face that I would use, as I am trying to go for more of an edgy and quirky magazine and that needs to show through my masthead as it will be the first thing that most people see.

Quick analysis of Marie Claire

Marie Claire is a lifestyle magazine that is aimed at women of ages 20-35. Marie Claire is for womens magazine, and you can tell this by the colours that are used on the front cover, and by the celebrity used as the main cover image.

Content - Marie Claire is a lifestyle magazine, that is full of Health, Beauty, Fashion and Celebrity news. It also has several pages that are dedicated to advertisement.
Images - The main image is of a well known fashion and music role model. The picture is a very paparazzi pose, and looks quite natural. The image is in the center to show that it is one of the main attraction of this issue.

Language and mode of address - the language used is very informal, it is like they are speaking to some one they know. It uses language aimed at women that is very sophisticated. The tone that it uses is like its giving advice to people on all the subjects that they involve in their magazine.
Layout - the magazine front cover like most front covers have its central dominate image in the center of the cover, and then surrounding the image there is blocks of writhing.
Font colour and size - The font colours are defiantly styled between black and red they use these colours because they are very bold and out standing colours. The back ground of the magazine is a simple neutral white colour.

Quick analysis of NME magazine

The New Music Magazine better known as NME is an alternative rock magazine which has been published weekly since march 1952. Like NME i want my magazine to mainly focus on music, i want to show off artists that could be in the chart if they got a bigger fan base. NME is known for displaying the greatest music, and i would love my magazine to be known as a magazine that has the best new artists around.

Content - NME focuses mainly on the worlds greatest rock music and has plenty of interviews in it, but as well as music it also has good brands and adverts in it and fantastic photography.

images - The main image of the magazine has a very serious look about it, the expression on his face and the way he has his arms folded shows how serious the magazine is, this is a contrast of what the magazine thinks about itself, it doesn't take itself to too seriously.

Language and mode of address - The language used on the front cover of the magazine is very informal, it has a bit of a comical tone to it which completely contrasts to the central dominate image. It is defiantly uses more sophisticated language which shows the target audience that they are aiming for.

Layout - The magazine front cover has a plain simple natural back ground colour and has only one main image of the front. Around the main image is several different blocks of writing breaking up the front cover.

Font colour and size - The colour of writing that stands out the most is the red used for the central dominate image. This is what helps back up the image as red is a very serious colour and the image is very serious.

Introduction to my magazine

My name is Hannah and my music magazine is called UCA. This stands for Up and Coming Artists. It has also heavily influenced the audience of my music magazine because UCA is big part of peoples university experience. so my target audience is males aged 18 - 23. It would be sold at university's around the London area, and in some selected shops.
My magazine is based on music which is not well known and not in the charts, but they are really good and should be in the charts but because they don't have much of a fan base yet they cant be.
The music I would be focusing on would be indie/underground.
I would price my magazine at £1.
